The Heart of History: Story Ideas for VA250

March 9, 2026

Virginia sits at the heart of America’s founding story, making it a natural place to explore during the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. From historic sites and experiences to themed road trips and commemorative programs, the Commonwealth offers countless angles for coverage tied to VA250. Here are a few story ideas to help get you started.

VA250 Passport
The Virginia 250 Passport is a free, commemorative travel guide and engagement program launched by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture in partnership with Virginia’s leading historic sites and supported by the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the VA250 Commission. The 64-page booklet encourages visitors to explore 70 museums and historic destinations across five regions of the Commonwealth, collect site stamps, and receive discounts of up to 15% at participating locations, with eligibility for prize drawings through December 2026. Distributed at major historic attractions, Virginia Welcome Centers, VA250 events, and the VA250 Mobile Museum, the passport serves as both a keepsake and an interactive way for travelers and families to experience Virginia’s central role in America’s founding during the nation’s 250th commemoration. More information is available here.

Historic Taverns
Virginia is home to some of the nation’s oldest taverns, many of which date back to the early 1700s. Though these historic establishments have evolved over time, several have returned to their original purpose—welcoming travelers with warm hospitality and a taste of the past. In Charlottesville, Michie Tavern offers an immersive 18th‑century dining experience featuring fried chicken, barbecue, and classic Southern fixings. In Colonial Williamsburg, meticulously reconstructed taverns bring history to life, including Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, which legend holds was a favorite of George Washington for its renowned seafood. In Middleburg, the Red Fox Inn & Tavern, established in 1728, continues its centuries‑old legacy under the stewardship of generations dedicated to preserving its charm. Across the Commonwealth, many restaurants housed in historic buildings invite visitors to dine where history still lingers.

The Mother of Presidents
Virginia proudly claims eight U.S. presidents—more than any other state—and was the birthplace of four of the nation’s first five leaders. Explore sites of presidential significance across the Commonwealth and discover travel inspiration for a history‑rich, truly “presidential” road trip.
